As the location of the second capital of Siam after Sukhothai, Ayuthaya was once a bustling city of the Thai kingdom. At that time it was one of the world's wealthiest and most cosmopolitan cities and was so well-endowed with temples that sunlight reflecting off their gilt decoration was said glitter from miles away.
