Dining
Once you enter Serene Pavilions through the imposing gated entrance you are in an environment where everything and everyone is there to cater to your every wish and desire: to create a world of tropical fantasy and languid days of eating sumptuous food, drinking delicious wine, swimming, reading in the palm garden or wandering along the near deserted beach watching and talking to the local fisherman about which of their catch you will be consuming tonight for dinner.
The Pavilions Restaurant is as picturesque a setting as is imaginable in which to savour some truly memorable food, which combines the bountiful local produce with some of the finest ingredients from around the world.
The Executive Chef and his extensive team along with the epicurean owners have created a menu full of flair, creativity and taste that will both challenge and delight the taste buds.
The restaurant itself faces due west and sits above the Amritha bar. Discreetly and ornately furnished one of the guiding concepts of the hotel space is adhered too and with seductive lighting by night and the natural harmonies of Sri Lanka by day it’s a truly romantic setting, looking over the palm infused garden and on to the glistening Indian Ocean, with nothing but the occasional tropical bird and incoming fishing boat to distract from the ambience, food and wine. The menu is changed daily, a testament to the freshness of the food and the imagination of the kitchen. Upon arrival and perhaps the most strenuous thing we will ask of you is to sit down with our head chef and go through your culinary requirements and expectations. Unobtrusive interaction between and guests and staff is at the very heart of the hotel’s ethos and we invite you to challenge our kitchen team to exceed your expectations.
If complete privacy is the order of the day, a chef will come to your villa and cook for you, creating the perfect home from home environment, be it from the menu, barbeque, your creation or for the adventurous the chef’s personal interpretation of the vast array of ingredients available within our kitchen.
Of course if you wish to take a meal by the pool, on the beach or in a secluded corner of the garden, then that is no problem for us and the levels of service and attention to detail will remain of the same reassuringly high standard.
The Amritha Bar is quite simply a stunning place to sit and have a drink. Facing due west and looking out over the garden and onto the beach and ocean, the sunsets will fulfill and exceed your dreams of tropical paradises on dreary January afternoons. The furniture like the rest of the hotel is a beguiling contrast of Balinese and Sri Lankan and with plenty of deep and inviting chairs is as good a spot as any in Sri Lanka to have a sundowner and forget about the nuisances of everyday life.
The selection of liquor is what you would expect from a world class hotel. Just like the kitchen the concept of the bar is all about informal but top end hospitality. While complete privacy is the hallmark of Serene Pavilions humans are by nature mostly sociable beats and the Amritha Bar allows casual interaction with fellow guests, without the stifling sense of duty that prevails in many hotels to carry on conversations from the night before, both because of the secluded nature of the pavilion’s and the languid ambience of the hotel as a whole. The wine list is comprehensive, with a particular emphasis on the New World. Arrack is the national drink of Sri Lanka and the staff will be talking with great authority when recommending a particular brand.
Each morning at dawn, men known as toddy tappers move among the tops of coconut trees using connecting ropes not unlike tightropes to get the raw ingredients for arrack. To give our guests context our back garden was a coconut plantation, as you can still see in the symmetrical planting of the tree’s. There are plenty of easier ways for a man to earn his daily bread, but few finer places in which to sample the local beverage.
Recreation
For those wishing to see more of Sri Lanka than the little bit of perfection that is Serene Pavilions there are a huge array of activities to be enjoyed, places to visit and surprises in store. The staff at the hotel will do everything to assist your tips and of course add a touch of local knowledge.

Here are some suggestions:
- Golf
- Cricket
- Water Sports
- Shopping
- Galle Fort
These are just a few examples of the vast array of attractions Sri Lanka has to offer. Tea trails, rain forests, turtle sanctuaries, stunning places of worship and miles of beautiful coastline are all there to be explored. If you would like to arrange some trips before arrival that of course is not a problem, or for those wishing to plan their holiday off the cuff, please just ask any of our staff.
First impressions we are told are vital and that is why the Serene Pavilion ‘Clubhouse’ goes beyond the normally rather foreboding lobbies of many hotels.
Surrounded by water features, our fully equipped gym and spa, it is in the clubhouse that your holiday with us begins. It’s also a focal point of the hotel, creating a very intimate little village, with a hair salon, nail spa, boutique and jewelry shop as well as the spa and gym.
Space, light and tranquility are omnipresent, friendly staff are on hand and the sweet scent of the Serene gardens will enchant your senses, with the open walled and highly ventilated ceiling design. You are on holiday.
The Reading Room is something of a contradiction: for a hotel that values guest privacy so highly why have a room dedicated to the most solitary of pastimes?
Well the location is pretty special, looking out over the pool for starters. There is also the question of a place to store the extensive library of books we have built up: be it in the Reading Room the garden or by the pool there are few more rewarding places than Serene Pavilions in which to get stuck into a good novel.
We have a selection of games, comfy seating and the ubiquitous Serene tranquility to tempt you in as well. Or perhaps you simply need a break from gazing at the Indian Ocean, palm trees and dreamy sunsets. Perhaps.
The swimming pool of Serene Pavilions is a focal point for the hotel, but a discreet and stunning one. Set between the Clubhouse and the gardens within the pristine and lush gardens, it goes miles beyond most people’s conations of what a swimming pool is.
Stylish designed with clean lines and acute angels, an imposing palm tree acts as an unofficial guardian of the pool, discreetly watching the very gentle day to day life of Serene Pavilions from its privileged vantage point in the north east corner of the pool.
We ask guests to use the alternative garden path between the clubhouse and pavilions, so as not to intrude upon the personal space of those using the pool. Like everything else at the hotel the pool is about your own private world of decadent luxury. Likewise you will never have to worry about such trivialties as waiting or saving a sun bed.
Even if the hotel was full and every guest decided at the same moment to lounge by the pool, there are ample sun beds and space, so your privacy is never breached.
The submerged Jacuzzi beds are the last word in watery relaxation, the pool is long enough for a serious swim, the loungers plumped by thick cushions, sun aplenty, but also for those wishing to admire the view without the heat of the sun, a quaint Balinese Bale.
The Serenity Spa is for many guests the first port of call upon arrival, the perfect place to unwind after a long flight and as your holiday unravels potentially a place to fall ever so slightly in love with, such are the comforts and pampering that await inside. Like everything we offer at Serene Pavilions flexibility is a must and to this end the therapists can be asked to come to your pavilion for a relaxing end of day massage.
The therapists are trained and respected practioners of Ayurveda therapy, which is indigenous to the subcontinent and goes beyond the simple confines of loosening a back and delves into the body, mind and soul.
In some rural parts of Sri Lanka Ayurveda medicine is still used. We are hoping that there is no such need for medicine during your stay with us. Instead our therapists along with our chefs can create a program of treatments suited to our guests individual needs and requirements that will perfectly compliment the harmonious surroundings in which they are undertaken and leave a refreshed body and cleansed mind.
