Dining
Savour great food with a stunning ocean or river view. Choose from four restaurants and bars to suit your mood and palate. Dine on international specialties and authentic Sri Lankan recipes in tempting a la carte menus and generous buffet style. Follow a dip in the pool with exotic refreshments, and toast sumptuous sundowner cocktails. While the in-room dining service and unique specialty experiences transform mealtimes into indulgent occasions.
This restaurant’s peninsula location invites you to dine in air conditioned comfort with a fantastic ocean view, or on an al fresco terrace overlooking the river. A daily rotating menu of international favourites showcases Italian, Mexican and Chinese cuisine, as well as local Sri Lankan specialties. Select char grilled steaks or freshly caught seafood, followed by delicious desserts.
Italian fine dining awaits next door at Anantara Kalutara Resort’s Acquolina restaurant. Tuck into the freshest baked seabass cooked the traditional way with garlic, herbs, and white wine, wash it down with the finest vintages, and top it off with cannoli treats. Choose from irresistible settings – outside by the adults-only pool or in the intimate setting of the wine cellar.
In addition to the restaurants and bars, a collection of specialty dining experiences are designed to indulge, inspire and surprise. Treat someone special to a romantic dinner in a range of idyllic settings. Delve into the island’s seafood bounty, cooked precisely to your liking. Picnic on soft powdery sands, or join our chefs for an interactive occasion in the kitchen.
Just a stroll away at Anantara Kalutara Resort, Spice Traders serves up the best of Thai, Chinese, and Indian cuisine. Taste your way across the region’s best-loved culinary cultures in an al fresco sala by the river. The Jingha Til Tikka oven-roasted tiger prawns and Thai-style Seabass come highly recommended.
Recreation
The long stretch of unspoilt beach provides the perfect base from which to explore the area, be it meandering along river, paddling through the old canals to passing through unspoiled countryside and experiencing the local culture. Kalutara is widely recognised as a nature lover’s haven; marvel at the white vented drongo, eagles, owls, white-breasted waterhen, Ceylon myna, pigeons, doves and black-hooded oriole swooping overhead.
Famous for its colourful, soft basketry, a visit to the Kalutara Basket Centre exhibits the work of local craftsmen. A short trip to the neighbouring town of Palataota is a must for a site inspection of Richmond Castle, an exquisite country house in a 42-acre fruit garden estate. Built in 1896 this magnificent hybrid of Indian & British architecture was originally a spice plantation mansion.
Back at the resort and overlooking the river, guests have the opportunity to try Yoga at no extra charge under the watchful gaze of our experienced Yoga Instructor once a week. In addition to a sun-drenched swimming pool and shaded children’s pool, sports facilities at the resort include a choice of non-motorised water sports such as windsurfing, canoeing, sailing the ocean in a catamaran and kayaking down the Kalu Ganga River under the guidance of trained instructors. For more traditional sports there is a well-equipped gym as well as flood-lit tennis courts and beach volleyball.
