Accomodation
The 152 rooms at Heritance Kandalama showcase the architectural genius of Geoffrey Bawa.
Split between two wings, all rooms overlook the Kandalama tank and forest. Those in the Dambulla wing also have views of the enormous Buddha on Dambulla Rock, while rooms in the Sigiriya wing look out over the famous rock fortress. Every room is set at a different angle from its neighbours, so the view from each is unique.
Entering your room is like entering your own private world – a five-star cocoon at the centre of the 230-acre Kandalama estate. Polished wood floors and sophisticated colour palettes of black, grey and red are complemented by local fabrics and hangings. The glass-fronted bathrooms make you feel part of the natural landscape outside: you can take a refreshing shower or relax in the Jacuzzi without fear of being overlooked (except maybe by the monkeys who casually clamber up the creepers on your balcony!). Each bathroom is tastefully supplied with custom-made Kandalama toiletries.
Rooms
Making for an ideal Sigiriya accommodation option in the heart of the Cultural Triangle, our Superior Rooms in the Dambulla wing have private balconies with a view of the lake and the Dambulla Rock. The shower cubicles are equipped with giant rain shower heads to provide a refreshing, invigorating experience.

Dining
Heritance cuisine takes the best local ingredients and techniques and combines them with Western presentation and influences to produce healthy dishes that look stunning and taste divine. We use no artificial flavours, fragrances, sauces or animal fats. And we serve it in courses, unlike traditional Sri Lankan dishes, which are presented all together.
Because Heritance cuisine relies on local and regional ingredients, you will find different specialities at each Heritance hotel. For example, at Heritance Kandalama, our Indigenous Gourmet Spice Dinner provides a showcase for Heritance cuisine.
And if you’d like to try spicing up your cooking at home, the Kandalama cookbook includes a whole section on Heritance cuisine.
Our main restaurant is on the sixth floor, with full-length glass windows providing superlative views over the lake. Sometimes you can dine outside, accompanied by the haunting flute music of Siripala.
By day you might spot a purple-rumped sunbird sipping nectar from the flowering shrubs planted outside; in the evening, candlelight reflects off the carefully crafted metal tree sculptures, creating a more intimate ambience.
There is always something going on at our chef action stations, from waffles and omelettes at breakfast to Mongolian stir fries or barbecues on our theme nights.
Our Fusion dining restaurant on the seventh floor offers sophisticated fusion dining, blending cultural influences from around the globe.
You can travel the world in a single meal, perhaps starting with Iranian mutton kofta on roasted aubergine and pomegranate salad. Then linger over baked red snapper marinated with tahini and sumac, served with Spanish saffron rice and olive tomato gravy, before ending up with tropical fruit kebab flamed in red rum and accompanied by wood apple, mango cassata and toffee cream.
Naturally, we have an equally international wine list to match your menu.
Café Kachchan is on the fifth floor, overlooking the infinity pool, Sigiriya Rock Fortress and Kandalama lake. On arrival you will be invited to relax here with a cool drink while we take care of your registration.
At other times you can order light bites and snacks, such as our signature jumbo sandwich, ice cream sundaes and cakes.
At weekends, there is a small stall where you can buy our home-made jams and pickles to take home. (At other times they are also available in the shop.)
Next to the Café Kachchan is the main residents’ bar, where we stock a wide range of international and local brands of beer, wine and spirits. Lion and Three Coins lager are made in Sri Lanka, while arrack is the local spirit, distilled from coconut juice.
Maybe you’d like to try our signature cocktail – a mix of lime wedges, brown sugar, lemongrass, apple cordial and brandy on ice. Or how about a Caraguwa, which combines old arrack with carrot, guava and grapefruit juice?
You can also watch your favourite films, sports or TV programmes on the giant screen here while enjoying a drink.
The spacious Kanchana Lounge, on the sixth floor opposite the main restaurant, is decked out with comfortable basket chairs and sofas and stylish wooden animal sculptures. It’s the place to go for coffee and a liqueur after dinner. Liquor and Light snacks are served anytime of the day.
We offer entertainment here every evening, from live bands and flute music to cultural shows, including dancing by hotel staff at weekends.
There’s also a billiard table.
Recreation
Immediately around the hotel we offer lots of other activities to help you explore the wonders of the natural environment. You can go on nature trails or jungle treks , or view the hotel from the water or air.
Or explore the area by bike or on the back of a horse or elephant.
Some activities may be seasonal or may be cancelled in poor weather. Participation is at your own risk.
Drawn from ancient Asian traditions, our highly skilled Six Senses Spa therapists use indigenous herbs as well as tropical fruits and exotic oils combined with steam, sauna, massage, scrubs, baths and wraps.
Swedish, Asian and aromatherapy massages are available as well as our own Ayurvedic traditional massages.
We also offer beauty treatments like facials, manicures and pedicures, along with a full range of beauty products that you can buy to take home.
We have six treatment rooms, including four double rooms for couples, plus separate steam rooms and saunas for men and women. There is also a relaxation area where you can wind down with a cup of ginger tea after your treatment.
We recommend that you book in advance and that you arrive at least 15 minutes before your appointment time. On arrival we ask that you take a few moments to complete a lifestyle consultation form to help us with your treatment preferences.
We recommend booking a free sauna and steam before your spa treatments. This helps to enhance the benefits of your treatments and stimulate blood and lymphatic circulation.
A trip in a hot air balloon provides the ultimate views over Kandalama lake and the surrounding landscape.
We lift off from the hotel grounds as the sun rises and drift gently across the sandstone and jungle below. With no noisy engine to disturb the peace, you can enjoy the stunning vistas as the world below wakes to another day. Watch your pilot gradually lower the balloon to inches above the evergreen trees as you pick leaves or touch the tree tops, spot a bird or an animal waking to the daybreak. A Hot Air Balloon Flight is a participative activity and you can assist in the inflation and the deflation of the balloon if you wish.
Our route and final landing spot will depend on the direction and strength of the wind, but the flight lasts about 45 minutes. We will bring you back to the hotel afterwards.
The Heritance KandalamaEco Park demonstrates best practice in conservation. You can see our papermaking plant, where waste paper is recycled with elephant dung, along with our sewage treatment plant, a plant nursery, herbal garden and beehives.
In our garbage sorting centre you can learn about some innovative uses for items traditionally regarded as waste – for example, making paths out of discarded curd pots.
Our eco museum has exhibitions on local wildlife and a small library. There’s also an animal rehabilitation centre, where we care for injured creatures before releasing them back into the wild.
The Eco Park is open to hotel guests and the general public every day. Entry is free.
Located at the heart of the cultural triangle, Heritance Kandalama is close to two UNESCO World Heritage Sites – the 2,000-year-old cave temple at Dambulla and the Sigiriya Rock Fortress.
Two other UNESCO World Heritage Sites, Anuradhapura and Polonnaruwa, are also within driving distance, as is the Minneriya wildlife sanctuary
GYM
As a hotel resident you have free access to our fully air-conditioned gym, with four treadmills, two cycling machines, two step machines, free weights and other equipment. Our gym instructor, is happy to provide help and advice.
There are also showers and a changing room.
Open: 24 hours
BILLIARD
Our Billiard table is in the Kanchana Lounge on the sixth floor.
INDOOR GAMES
Table tennis, carrom and chess tables are on the fourth floor. Please put the equipment back in the drawers to prevent it being eaten by monkeys!
